Serums can be extremely overwhelming – from how to use them to how to choose them. Is serum the same as a moisturizer? Why are they so expensive? What the heck is hyaluronic acid? What does serum even do? Glow Club is here to help.
What Are Serums?
Serums are essentially a pep talk for your skin right after cleansing. They deliver powerful ingredients that penetrate deep into your skin more easily than normal skincare products because they are made up of smaller particles than typical moisturizers and creams. This makes them a great tool for targeting your specific skin concerns. The difficult part is knowing how to choose the right ingredients for your skin and how to use them!
In my opinion, you shouldn’t be using any product that says “anti-aging” on it until you are in your late 20’s. Anti-aging products are aggressive on your skin, particularly retinol products, often causing redness and irritation. Retinols are great for men and women in their 30’s, 40’s, etc. who have already developed fine lines and wrinkles, and not to mention they are extremely effective.
However, for young skin (20’s and younger), they can actually cause premature aging of the skin. Because these products are aggressive, they can damage young skin if they are not used with caution. Retinols make your skin extra sensitive to ultraviolet light, which can cause the wrinkles that you are trying to prevent! Anti-aging products are meant to reverse aging, not to prevent it.
Here are a few serums that I have tried and loved for men and women in their 20’s:
- Dior Capture Youth Intense Rescue Serum: Although this serum is a bit pricier, it is one of the best serums I’ve tried. The main ingredient is argan oil which is great for sensitive skin, extremely soothing, and delivers intense hydration. https://www.dior.com/en_us/products/beauty-Y0925294-capture-youth-intense-rescue-age-delay-revitalizing-oil-serum
- Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate Face Oil: This nighttime serum replenishes your skin overnight, helping you to wake up with plump, bright, radiant skin in the morning. Its soothing, moisturizing, and repairing with lavender, primrose oil, and squalene as the main ingredients. https://www.kiehls.com/skincare/face-oils/midnight-recovery-concentrate-face-oil/819.html
- The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% +B5: The Ordinary is the place to go for quality products on the low. This hyaluronic acid serum delivers deeply penetrating hydration that is also insanely light-weight. https://www.ulta.com/hyaluronic-acid-2-b5?productId=pimprod2007107
Key Takeaway: The goal in your twenties is essentially prevention: SPF and hydration. Stick to this mantra, and you will do your future self a favor.
